William J. Morgan, instructor of the Association of Young Christians (YMCA, Holyoke, Mass.), Decided to mix the elements of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball in order to create a new game for his business friends that would be less contact than basketball. He created a volleyball game. Morgan borrowed a net from tennis and set it at a height of about 196 cm from the floor, so that the net was just above the head of a person of average height at that time. During a demonstration of the game, someone noticed Morgan that the players toss the ball back and forth over the net and possibly “volleyball” would be the best name for this sport.
